Boulder, CO: Paladin Press, 2006. Revised Edition. Presumed first printing thus. Trade paperback. Very good. Bill Border. ix, [1], 44, [2] pages. Embossed stamp of noted Naval and Arms historian John Forrest Lyman on half-title page. Cover has minor wear and soiling. John Dean "Jeff" Cooper (May 10, 1920 - September 25, 2006) was a United States Marine, the creator of the "modern technique" of handgun shooting, and an expert on the use and history of small arms. In 1976, Cooper founded the American Pistol Institute in Paulden, Arizona (later the Gunsite Academy). Cooper began teaching shotgun and rifle classes to both law enforcement and military personnel, as well as civilians, and did on-site training for individuals and groups. He was known for his advocacy of large caliber handguns. Cooper's modern technique defines pragmatic use of the pistol for personal protection. The modern technique emphasizes two-handed shooting using the Weaver stance, competing with and supplanting the once-prevalent one-handed shooting. Cooper uses down to earth English and while the book is focused on mindset much of it also applies to situational awareness. Cooper crafts his philosophy of the combat mindset around seven principles; Alertness, Decisiveness, Aggressiveness, Speed, Coolness, Ruthlessness, and Surprise. Jeff Cooper's 'Principles of Personal Defense' will mentally prepare you to handle any violent situation that you may have to face. Today's world now forces ordinary people to seriously consider and prepare for their own safety, and this book will help you to develop the proper mindset needed to successfully survive any situation that you may encounter.
