Author's Presentation Copy, inscribed "To Andrew from his affec brother H Rider Haggard 1894." Henry Rider Haggard (1856-1925) was the author of a number of adventure novels set in exotic locales. His books, including She and King Solomon's Mines, are still popular today. Haggard traveled to Mexico in 1891 to do research for this book and sadly his young son died while he was away. The book describes the first interactions between the Spanish and South American natives, as well as murders, shipwrecks, and slavery. Colonel Andrew Haggard, who had a distinguished military career - he was one of he first British officers to command in the Egyptian army - was also a successful novelist, travel writer and poet. The set consists of 5 volumes (Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are in one volume) with detailed notes, additional information and numerous illustrations. This set has been recently rebound by Elizabeth Howard - with pale blue calf spines (with title labels) and corners and matching marbled boards. New endpapers. Page edges to side and base untrimmed. Each volume has a colour frontispiece: in the case of Mansfield Park, this has an additional flap to give 2 different views of the same scene; and in Vol V there is a colour frontispiece for both books. A weekly collection of stories, a mixture of fiction and nonfiction along with social issues of the time. While Dickens was the editor and he did serialize a few of his stories through this magazine, it have several "unnamed" contributors. An American edition was published but not well received as it pertained to the English way of life not American. Complete London editions are scarce. A complete set bound in 3/4 contemporary red morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, all edges marbled., raised bands gilt, title within one compartment gilt. All hinges and joints are fine and tight, internally clean and bright without foxing. Some rubbing or darkening to bindings. From the library Joseph Greene with his armorial bookplate. A very nice set containing six of the nine extra Christmas numbers.

First edition thus. sumptuously bound full blue crushed morocco binding by Peter Verburg, signed with his characteristic monogram on rear dentelle. A graceful binding with encircling leaf and bloom design between concentric rules and inlaid in the petals with turquoise morocco on cover and spine. Rear cover and dentelles with gilt ruling. Peter Verburg, a pupil of the famed Ellen Gates Starr in Chicago, was an accomplished Chicago bookbinder who studied for some time under Douglas Cockerell at Hull House in Chicago, and then later by Ralph Randolph Adsms at his bindery in New York. Verburg later went on to become the director of the bindery at the Merrymount Press under D. B. Updike. A beautiful example of Verburg's work. Engraved frontispiece, rubricated title page. All edges gilt. Fine in blue cloth slipcase.

Original publisher's plum cloth with covers blocked in blind, spine blocked in blind and with gilt lettering. With a woodcut title for "The Parlour Novelist. A Series of Works of Fiction. By the Most Celebrated Authors," a half-title lettered "Volume IV. Mansfield Park" and four pages of advertisements at the end. Bright yellow original endpapers. A completely unsophisticated copy. Fine, rarely seen thus. The pages are entirely untrimmed, and there are pronounced variations in size. With the pencil signature of A. Budd. This is the first separate edition of "Mansfield Park" to appear after the expiration of the copyright in 1842. Copies were remaindered in June 1848 (Sadlier) the title was reissued by the same publisher in 1851 as No.60 in the Parlour Library Series.

From the estate of my great-great grandfather.Includes many unique poems and recitations such as "To a skull", "Uncle Daniel's Introduction to a Mississippi Steamer", "The Leak in the Dyke", etc. More well-known poetry includes "Song of Birds", "Old Ironsides", and "Bannock Burn" by Robbie Burns.
