Original maroon cloth with gilt-stamped cover title; back cover has matching blind-stamped title; blind-stamped decorative border on both boards. Boards have bevelled edges. Dark brown endpapers. Each leaf of illustration includes one verse. The translator, Matilda Pratt Despard (1827-1915), was the aunt of the illustrator, Eleanor Greatorex (1854-1917). First published in German in 1870, this was the last book published by Hoffman, best known today as the author of Struwwelpeter (Slovenly Peter). In Fair Condition: loss at ends of spine; cloth is rubbed and faded; closed 2.5-cm. tear from lower edge of pp. 3-4; soiled throughout, although primarily in margins; tight and complete.
