Frazier Clark Jr.'s definitive "Nathaniel Hawthorne - A Descriptive Bibliography". Number A16.1 in Clark's bibliography and number 7600 in BAL. This copy is in the following states and sub-states, again as described by Clark: Binding: in the style of Ticknor format A. Brown bold-ribbed T cloth with blind-stamped floral device inside ruled panels on both covers. Spine gold-stamped. Cream-colored wove endpapers. The contents are listed on pp. iii-iv and there is no preface. This is a key indicator of the first edition versus the second edition, which includes a preface. The other variants between the first and second editions are also present. These consist of sixty-nine typographical and spelling errors and punctuation changes throughout the text. Pierre Marcel de Serres was a 19th-century French naturalist who, in 1809, was commissioned by Napoleon to go on a mission to Austria and Bavaria. Napoleon had requested that Serres tour the major factories and iconic locations in Vienna with the intention of improving similar buildings in France. Following his voyage, Serres published a book of his discoveries, findings, and experiences in Austria in which he describes the people, customs, cultures, and history of Austria.
This impressive 1821 first edition work includes 48 hand-colored engravings, views of costume and dress.

1824 ARCTIC Voyage 1ed William Parry North Pole Eskimos Polar Exploration MAPS

An exceedingly rare and valuable 1824 edition of William Parry's personal account from his second voyage to the Northwest Passage. He was one of the first explorers to reach the North Pole, setting the record for the furthest north any human had reached! Parry recounts his interactions with Eskimos, navigations through fog and ice, viewing meteorological phenomena including the Aurora Borealis, and discovering new birds and plants.

The Arctic Bibliography says of this work:
"Abstracts from the author's journals of his three voyages to the Canadian arctic waters; of his attempt to reach the North Pole and his account of the Eskimos."

This work includes 38 impressive, engraved maps and illustrations after the sketches of Captain Lyon, many of which illustrated the domestic lives of Eskimos. It also includes a vocabulary of the Eskimo language. Note what these references say of this work.

Rare first edition on the most important voyage of the North Pacific!

In 1791, Royal Navy officer George Vancouver set out on an expedition to North America's Pacific Northwest, exploring western Canada, Alaska, and parts of Northwest United States. The specifics of this voyage were published at the turn of the century, both in English and French, and is often considered to be the most accurate account of the Pacific Northwest. This 1800 first French edition includes impressive full-page views of Vancouver's discoveries, including an impressive engraving of Mount Rainier. Perhaps Cowan's perspective is the most telling:

Small nick and some fraying at the crown of the spine, faint old spot and tide mark at top edge near the gutter (faintly beginning at p. 207, then to end); still, a very good, bright, tight copy. First edition of Thoreau's third book, published posthumously and equipped with a preliminary 33 page biographical sketch by Ralph Waldo Emerson. BAL records the edition consisted of 1558 copies. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1923 A near fine set of the 1st Oxford edition of Jane Austen's Novels, in the large paper version - limited to 1,000 sets of which 950 were for sale. The set consists of 5 volumes (Northanger Abbey and Persuasion are in one volume) with detailed notes, additional information and numerous illustrations. This set has been recently rebound by Elizabeth Howard - with pale blue calf spines (with title labels) and corners and matching marbled boards. New endpapers. Page edges to side and base untrimmed. A weekly collection of stories, a mixture of fiction and nonfiction along with social issues of the time. While Dickens was the editor and he did serialize a few of his stories through this magazine, it have several "unnamed" contributors. An American edition was published but not well received as it pertained to the English way of life not American. Complete London editions are scarce. A complete set bound in 3/4 contemporary red morocco over marbled paper covered boards with matching endpapers, all edges marbled., raised bands gilt, title within one compartment gilt. All hinges and joints are fine and tight, internally clean and bright without foxing. Some rubbing or darkening to bindings. From the library Joseph Greene with his armorial bookplate. A very nice set containing six of the nine extra Christmas numbers.
