"Our Name, We get the name Presbyterian from the Bible. That statement may surprise some people who have been reading their Bibles for years and do not recall having come across the word "Presbyterian." We must remember that the Bible was not originally written in English. The New Testament was written in Greek and the Old Testament in Hebrew. By 150 B.C. the Old Testament had been translated into Greek. When we turn to the Greek Bible we find a word that occurs about sixty times in the New Testament and about a hundred times in the Old Testament; this word, when pronounced in Greek, sounds very much like the word Presbyterian. It is from this word that we get our name. It means an elder. Literally speaking, a Presbyterian church is a church governed by elders.
