Prelude. A Novel Nichols, Beverley, Published by Chatto & Windus, London, 1920. First Edition dated in Roman numerals title page; no additional printings listed. Green cloth boards; gilt spine titles and gilt stave of music (treble clef) to bottom front board. Lower page edge is rough cut. Boards are clean and with light wear primarily at spine edges. Hinges are firm; pages firmly attached. There is a 2cm by 1cm bookdealer's label affixed to top left pastedown; no other markings. Pages are clean with light toning generally not affecting text block. There is a tiny (3mm) closed tear right edge half title and very light paper fraying inner hinge top of pages 129- 146. Prelude is Nichols' first book and very scarce. It depicts the effects of WW1 on the life of a boy at an English Public School drew much from his own schooldays at Marlborough College. It was described by The Times Literary Supplement (19 February 1920)as a book"which old and present members of the public schools will read with pleasure".
