First edition. 4to. 60 engraved plates (plate 55 bound out-of-order). vii, [1], [9]-116 pp. Contemporary speckled sheep, red morocco spine label; spine darkened, foxing throughout as usual First edition of Asher Benjamin's fifth book, after his full embrace of the Greek Revival. The plates illustrate the Greek orders in close detail, as well as frontispieces, porticoes, door, windows, cornices, stairs and various elements of carpentry and construction, and concludes with a complete plan of a church. Plate VII illustrates an order of Benjamin's invention that does not conform to any existing classical model, reasoning that "more than one half of all the columns and entablatures erected in country situations, for either internal or external finishings, belong neither to the Grecian nor Roman system." Casa del HerreroHouse of the Blacksmithstands today as one of the most fully developed and intact examples of Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. It was designed and built between 1922 and 1925 as a second house for George Fox Steedman, a St. Louis industrialist. Thought principally to be the work of George Washington Smith, the architect, Steedman himself generated many ideas during the initial design phase that were both a blessing and curse to Smith. Steedmans vision prevailed, and throughout the decade following the houses initial completion, he continued to rework both house and garden, engaging the architects Lutah Maria Riggs, Edwards, Plunkett & Howell, and Floyd Brewster, and garden… Read More

New Orleans architecture as it was, is, and should be. A stunning presentation of 19th-century gouache and watercolor archival paintings of New Orleans neighborhoods, this volume presents what old, renovated, restored, and new buildings not only might look like, but how they should look. An educational tool, architectural pattern book, city planner's handbook, and visual treasure, this resource invites its readers to study the footprints of the city's original edifices in order to rebuild and restore with authenticity. Examples of each New Orleans house type, historic plans for each house, and contemporary adaptive-use floor plans are highlighted.
