Brooklyn NY: Mergenthaler Linotype Co., 1963. Book. Very Good. Decorative Boards & Cloth. 165 pp. From the library of the (Daytona Beach) News-Journal with large "Property of" stampings on front and rear endpapers. Front hinge mostly exposed, binding still fairly firm. Foxing on end papers and apparently 2, front and rear, have been ripped out. Text complete. No markings. Brown and gray art deco covers, matching abstract Art Deco color illustrations setting off each chapter. Rear material includes a 25-pp script of a radio show titled "Salute to the Modern Newspaper," paying tribute to the German immigrant who invented the linotype machine. His saga is presented in human terms, with the technological details presented in language a layman can understand. This book celebrates the 50th anniversary of the Merganthaler Linotype Co., which long ago merged into a German conglomerate. Linotypes, which produced lines of "hot" type from molten lead alloys, became mostly obsolete by the 1960s, replaced by "cold type" photo offset printing. Some old linotypes can still be found in Third World printing plants as well as in American museums and historical displays in newspaper buildings. Size: 4to -- 10 in Tall Size: 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.
