Folio (10 1/2 x 12 1/2"), full green vellum with extensive gilt decoration, top edge gilt, 164p., a few marks on the vellum as is common in this edition, new ties, endpaper foxed as usual else VG+ to FINE. LIMITED TO ONLY 500 NUMBERED COPIES SIGNED BY NIELSEN and illustrated by him with 26 magnificent color plates with pictorial lettered tissue guards. This limited edition has 2 more color plates than in the trade edition. There are also decorative borders. This is a lavishly produced book.

London: Hodder & Stoughton, no date [1913]. [Children's Illustrated] FIRST EDITION. Quarto (32 x 26cm), pp.164. With 24 mounted colour plates, including a frontispiece, each with a captioned tissue guard. Re-bound later in the twentieth century in tan quarter cloth with grey paper over boards and green titles to plain paper labels on spine and upper. With the original endpapers, repaired to hinges. Top edge gilt, others untrimmed. Repairs to chipped and torn endpapers. Heavily browned to edges and margins, otherwise clean internally. Spine label toned and lightly chipped. Very good. A novel collection of Fairy Tales proposed by the illustrator Kay Nielson, who wanted to illustrate fanciful tales from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, but found little obvious material from the latter period. The novelist and critic Quiller-Couch was therefore recruited to assemble this interesting mix of stories, drawn from several different traditions.
