[New York]: [Farrar, Straus and Giroux], 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good +. Avedon, Richard. Quarto size, unpaginated, inscribed by Richard Avedon. Richard Avedon (1923-2004) was a prominent photographer in the field of fashion, and one of the leading photographers for "Vogue" magazine during the 1970s and 1980s; his portraits of numerous writers, actors, and celebrities had a crucial influence on the techniques and forms of photography. Avedon captures the personalities and sensibilities of his subjects, and he says, "'[t]he photographs. . .have a reality for me that the people don't. It's through the photograph that I know them.'" This collection of black-and-white photographs includes portraits of major cultural figures such as Willem de Kooning, Groucho Marx, Marilyn Monroe, and Andy Warhol with members of The Factory. Although the photographs are posed, Avedon would let his subjects choose their own postures and expressions, creating an intimate view of these public figures.
Included also is an essay by American art critic Harold Rosenberg (1906-1978), best known for his writings on Abstract Expressionism and for coining the term "action painting"; here, he examines Avedon's techniques and approach to portraiture. This volume is a first edition, inscribed by Richard Avedon in his large, flowing hand on the front free endpaper.
___DESCRIPTION: Full white cloth, grey lettering on the spine, title page with black-and-white portrait of Alberto Giacometti, black-and-white photographs, including two five-page fold-outs and two three-page fold-outs, by Richard Avedon throughout; quarto size (12" by 9"), unpaginated with approximately eighty pages, inscribed by Richard Avedon on the front free endpaper "For / The --- / family / Avedon / Berkeley, 82". In a glossy white paper dust jacket with grey lettering on the front and rear panels and grey lettering on the spine.
___CONDITION: Volume is near fine, with clean boards, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the inscription referred to above entirely free of prior owner markings; very slight rubbing to the bottom corners, and top and bottom corners are gently bumped, else fine. The dust jacket is almost near fine, unclipped, clean overall except for a few minor, very light stray marks, minor edge wear most noticeable at the head of the spine, and some age-toning to the top edge. Overall a lovely copy of an inscribed Avedon collection of portraits.
___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
