London: George Routledge & Co A very good copy in the original decorative cloth binding with gilt decoration to the spine and blind stamped designs to the boards. Originally published as part of Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series as an introductory work for amateurs in the subject, principally children and young people. Undated but post 1865 when George Routledge and Sons took over the title. The binding is in near fine clean condition and the original yellow endpapers are present with a blind stamp to the fep. Contents are complete with colour frontispiece and 19 further colour plates bound at the rear. The frontispiece and title have some spotting to page edges and the tissue guard to the frontispiece is very spotty. Otherwise, the text is very bright and clean. Plates have spotting to edges and there is some spotting on the surface of plates XIII, XIV and XX.
