London: Lovell Reeve, 1857 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 20 hand coloured plates by George Brettingham Sowerby. One of the last volumes to be published in Lovell Reeve's Popular Natural History series, aimed at providing a good grounding for children and young people in a variety of natural science subjects. This copy has been rebacked and has new endpapers so it is sound and tight. The original spine has been relaid and the corners reinforced. The spine is faded but the binding is otherwise bright and clean. Contents are complete and clean. There is some brown toning to page edges particularly at the top and some spotting which affects around 3 of the plates. Publisher's catalogue at the rear. Please enquire if you would like to see additional images.
