London: Lovell Reeve, 1855 A good copy of the 1st edition in the original decorative cloth binding with colour frontispiece and 19 further colour plates. Part of the Popular Natural History series published by Lovell Reeve with the aim of producing sound introductory volumes to nature study for children, young people and amateurs. This one is authored by Maria Catlow although only her initials are given. She was the author of one of the very early volumes in the series - Popular British Entomology - which attracted a lot of criticism from experts at the time. Perhaps that accounts for the use of initials and the prominence given to the technical editor, Charles Daubeny. This copy has a bright front board and spine with light wear to corners (bottom corners with slight bump); light pulling to the spine, with small fray to the top; and small indentation to the bottom edge of the back board. There is some rubbing to the rear spine joint. The original yellow endpapers are present with some slight grubbiness to the front pastedown and pencil note of author to verso of fep. Contents are complete and clean, and the text is mostly unopened. Some of the stitching is a little wobbly and there is light toning to page edges.
