About This Item
London : Reeve and Co, 1852 A good copy of the 2nd edition in the original decorative cloth binding with 16 hand coloured plates. This was part of the Popular History series published originally in the late 1840's - mid 1850's. The series was designed to give young people a good introduction to the study of nature and a range of authors were employed to write on their particular subjects. Maria Catlow's work came in for some criticism but it is a nice example of its period and tries to take its readers with it by showing what they might expect to find month by month. The colour plates are well done. The decorative cloth binding has a gilt butterfly design on the front board and series designs and titles to the spine. The binding is sunned at the edges and on the spine and there are a couple of small tears to the spine joints. Corners have light wear with some bumping to the back corners. Contents are complete with a publisher's catalogue bound in at the front endpaper. Pen inscription to front pastedown and to rear free endpaper. Slight splitting to the rear endpaper at the joint. The plates are in near fine clean condition; paper is toned particularly to the edges and with occasional spotting.
