Polynesian Researches, During a Residence of Nearly Eight Years in the Society and Sandwich Islands by Ellis, William. Published by London: Fisher, Son & Jackson, 1831. Second Edition, Enlarged and Improved. Vol III only of 4 volume set. Green Cloth boards. 12mo - over 6 3/4 " - 7 3/4 " tall. 4 pages publisher ads tipped in front; ii, 407 pages including frontispiece, vignette title, one small wood block design and a folding engraved letter facsimile in Hawaiian. Boards in very good condition with label removal mark to lower spine; binding firm. Owners bookplate to front and back pastedowns (perhaps covering library labels); pages are wavy but tight; no mustiness detected and foxing is very light and occasional.William Ellis (1794 –1872) was an English missionary and author. He traveled through the Society Islands, Hawaiian Islands, and Madagascar. Ellis's classic Polynesian Researches, details his encyclopedic knowledge of Polynesia, its cultures and the history of missionary endeavor amongst them. Volume Three continues the narrative before concluding with a survey of other areas of Polynesia including the Marquesas, Australia and New Zealand. Opening of Chapter One, Vol III: "An intelligent observer during a transient visit to a foreign land become acquainted to a certain extent with the mental and spiritual necessities of its inhabitants but it is only by a continued residence among them that these can be accurately known."
