Garden City, N.Y.: Doubleday, Doran & Co. Inc, 1928. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine/very good. Field, Rachel. 24mo size, 62 pp. Rachel Lyman Field (1894-1942) was an American novelist, poet, and children's fiction writer, best known for her Newbery Award-winning "Hitty, Her First Hundred Years". Field also won a National Book Award, Newbery Honor award and two of her books are on the Lewis Carroll Shelf Award list. This is a timeless tale of a young girl who has to go to school wearing a dress she felt embarrassed to be seen in, but which "was a very experienced dress" and has a hint of white magic about it. A timeless theme, but set back in the days when children got one new dress for winter and gathered pine cones to heat the fire for dinner; an endearing glimpse into the childhood of almost a hundred years ago.

___DESCRIPTION: Bound in yellow cloth with salmon lettering on the front board and spine, salmon endpapers, a prior owner Christmas gift card tipped onto the front pastedown endpaper with a lovely illustration on the front of a young boy and girl with a vintage inscription inside which reads "I always gave mother some little odd thing like this that hit the mark." Beneath, in a different hand, "Aunt Annie from Althea, 1928"; illustrated title page, small vignette on the dedication page, with charming colour illustrations throughout; twenty-fourmo size (just under 5.75" by 4.25"), pagination: [i-vi], 1-56, the two pages following with small vignettes. The dust jacket with a colourful patchwork pattern that wraps from the back around to the front with a white rectangle with black lettering on the front, the front flap with a summary of the book and the original price of $.75, the back flap with publisher's ad for other children's books by Rachel Field.

___CONDITION: Volume near fine with bright boards free of wear, text block tight and square with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and other than the Christmas card referred to above, is free of prior owner markings; an old erasure mark (prior bookseller marking?) at the top right corner of the front pastedown endpaper, some light sunning to the top edge of the binding, and a spot or two on the rear joint, else fine. The unclipped dust jacket very good, some overall edgewear with one small chip out of the top of the front panel, sunning to the spine, and toning to the edges of the flaps.

___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details.
