Small quarto (11 1/2 X 8 inches) Japan: Getumeikai, 1959. First Edition. (5) 59 + (6) pages printed in Japanese and English on hand made Japanese vellum, with 26 individual fabric samples (25 are tipped in, the 26th sample is the cover material for the hardcover binding), plus a wood block print illustrating a woman in Japanese wardrobe working at a hand loom. Number 180 of a limited edition of 200. Housed in an ink blue stiff folder with bone ties. At the bottom of each page is a description of the sample, its pattern, its weave, and its dye; in addition to a small woodblock illustration of the plant from which the fabric is derived. Very good condition.

Dark green leatherette cover with gilt Modern Library logo on front, gilt titling on spine. Approximately 4 1/4 by 6 1/2 inches. Endpapers with illustrations by Horace Brodzky (from 1919-1925). The first interior page has overall age tanning. The endpapers have some crackling and closed tears (two areas in front, one are in rear). There appears to be a very light pencil marking on the front endpage. The interior is clean with no handwriting or markings and no tears. The cover has wear along the sides of the spine and the corners.

Colt volume has 422 pages, and the Winchester volume has 402 pages; both are printed on coated stock, and profusely illustrated with black and white and color photographs including several fold out plates. There is a General Index, and a Model Index in each book.

The Colt volume, published in 1974, is bound in blue leatherette, with the title in silver on the front cover over the rampant Colt trademark; the Winchester volume, published in 1975, is bound in red leatherette, with the title in silver over the Winchester horse and rider trademark. The leatherette boxed slip case has minor nicks at the edges, and a few scratches, neither affecting either volume - which are both clean and bright.

1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. Octavo (9 x 6 inches) Richmond, Virginia: Jones & Cook, 1880. 92 pages, six unnumbered leaves of illustrations (one of them a foldout map "Showing Transportation Facilities of Richmond, VA"), numerous local advertisements, an index of the advertisers that includes four booksellers, among tobacco leaf dealers, horse collar manufacturers, and many other trades and services. Good condition (original decorated printed wrappers beginning to separate, but still holding, minor chipping, not affecting contents).

A promotional directory of public buildings and landmarks, with a history of the city.

Under "Trade Notes," a paragraph for "Books, Binding &c." states, "The Booksellers of Richmond are all gentlemen of superior intelligence, and of long experience, possessing a critical knowledge of books, and a thorough familiarity with the needs of the scholar, professional man, and the general public."

Small quarto (11 x 8 1/4 inches) Published in the Interest of the Firemen's Relief Fund, December 1900. 116 pages of half tone black and white photos of early Los Angeles, portraits, and advertisements for Los Angeles businesses of the period.

Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.
