This is a handsome set of "The Poetical Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow." 1881; Houghton, Mifflin and Company; Boston. Soft leather binding with raised bands on the spine, gilt on all page edges and marbled end papers. All volumes are profusely illustrated with both full-page engravings and in-text illustrations. Complete set in 6 volumes. The volumes are larger in size - each measures 12" tall x 9 1/2" wide x 1" thick.
Condition:
Overall the set is in very good condition. Vol 6 has a 2" scratch on the front cover. Vol has a light water stain on the back cover; a small, light stain appears near the middle of the book and progressively grows larger to the last page; the last couple dozen pages also have a light stain along the outer edge/upper-outer corner. The remaining 5 vols have very clean interiors with no writing and only a few random ink smudges found; the top-right corner tip of the front end paper of vol 4 is torn...no other tears found. Some volumes have wear/tears at the cover corners and top/bottom edges of the spines.
Condition:

The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows
) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love.
