This new English edition of the poems of a twelfth-century troubadour provides an excellent example of the Golden Age of Provencal poetry. Peire Rogier was a contemporary of Bernart de Ventadour, Giraut de Bornelh and Raimbaut d'Orange. Of his works there remain eight love poems (cansos), including one of doubtful authenticity and a poem addressed to Raimbaut d'Orange (sirventes). The conventional themes of courtly love, as typified by the troubadour lyrical poetry of this period, humility, discretion, patience and moderation, form the subject matter of the poems, which are for the most part free from the artificiality and obscurity found in the work of some later troubadours: it is perhaps in the clarity, simplicity and naturalness of his style that Rogier's chief merit as a poet lies.
This is the first complete edition since Carl Appel's of 1882 and contains much information that was not available then. The introduction includes a section on Rogier's life as well as studies of his versification and style. A comprehensive glossary and a detailed critical apparatus are provided for each poem, as well as a complete list of major and minor variants and full explanatory notes.
