Symons's interest in various figures of the French symbolist movement led to his translation of a number of key writers, including Baudelaire. In 1900 Symons published his revelatory The Symbolist Movement in Literature, in which he writes that Baudelaire "spent his whole life in writing one book of verse (out of which all French poetry has come since his time), one book of prose in which prose becomes a fine art, some criticism which is the sanest, subtlest, and surest which his generation produced, and a translation which is better than a marvellous original. What would French poetry be today if Baudelaire had never existed?" James G. Nelson, in his study of Elkin Mathews, states that this volume was "among the more interesting as well as significant examples" of the Vigo Cabinet Series (p. 61). The publisher issued two bindings: one is wrappers (at 1s.) and one in cloth (at 1s. 6d.) This, the issue in wrappers, is notoriously fragile.…
