hardcover, leather bound. Very Good/None, as issued. Edinburgh: J. Elder No. 7 & and T. Brown No. I, 1797, A New Edition. Clean, tight-bound, two 12mos. Vol. 1, 282pp and Volume 2, 318pp. Volume 1 is tight-bound, but the front cover is loose but extant, clean and intact. Volume 2 is fully bound. Leather is soft and pliable, and somewhat rubbed, edges are lightly scuffed. Tips are lightly bumped. Volume 2 has a chip out of the head of the spine. They both have book plates from "Joseph Gregg Layne" on the front pastedown and signature of "Jessie Layne" (Joseph Gregg's father) on the ffes. Joseph Gregg Layne (1885-1952) was a leading authority and bibliographer of Californiana as well as president, member of the board of directors and, editor of the Quarterly for the Historical Society of Southern California and an organizer for E Clampus Vitus. It is believed that Ossian is a translation of an epic cycle of Scottish poems from the early dark ages. Ossian, a blind bard, sings of the life and battles of Fingal, a Scots warrior. It caused a massive cultural impact during the 18th-19th centuries Napolean carried a copy into battle; Goethe translated parts of it; Selma, Alabama was named after the home of Fingal, and it carried much, much more historical significance. These are very rare tomes and quite beautiful. More scans and info available.

A set as dashingly handsome as its subject, Louis-Francois-Armand du Plessis, Duc de Richelieu (1696-1788) , who was (often) a member of King Louis XV’s court, a soldier, diplomat, and celebrated womanizer. It is thought that the notorious character of Valmont in the 1782 classic novel Les Liaisons Dangereuses is based on Richelieu. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

Printed on laid paper with lots of "f's" for "s's", so appears a late 18th- early 19th century imprint. Rebound in dark green buckram with title stamped in gilt on spine. Top edges gilt. Sabin 91342 notes that this title was originally anonymously published in London in 1770 as the work of a recently deceased literary genius, widely thought to be Laurence Sterne, but later found out to be a literary hoax and the handiwork of Robert Griffith. ; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 227 pages .

The Spectator was a two or three page paper written by Addison and Steele that was published from 1711-1712 in London, England. Eight bound volumes of The Spectator were published in later runs, each volume containing about 200 daily editions.Boards are rubbed, scuffed and soiled and most of the gilt spine titles and red band backgrounds have faded. Corners are bumped. Volume two's rear board and volume eight's front board have seperated from the spine but have a very clean break and could be reattached with some basic rebinding. Raised spine ribs. Endpapers and title pages show minor browning with age, but all other pages are clean and bright for their age. Indexes at the rear of the texts.
