Thumb-marking present. Brown staining to pages throughout. Noticeable creasing to gutter. Cracking to hinges and gutters, leaving netting exposed. Boards have moderate edge-wear with bumping to corners and rubbing to surfaces. Visible crushing to spine ends. Noticeable tanning to spine and edges. Water staining to rear board.

Conrad Noel, 1869-1942, was the son of the author and an English priest known as the 'Red Vicar' of Thaxted for his Christian Socialism. He has inscribed the book to his first cousin, Charles Roden Buxton. Buxton was the son of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton and Lady Victoria Buxton, sister of the author. On the ffep a hand drawn bookplate by Aubrey Beardsley is pasted, dated Xmas, 1888. On the half title page there is the signature A V Beardsley, Xmas 1888. On the reverse of the frontispiece in the top corner is an ink stamp BEARDSLEY. .
