Conrad Noel, 1869-1942, was the son of the author and an English priest known as the 'Red Vicar' of Thaxted for his Christian Socialism. He has inscribed the book to his first cousin, Charles Roden Buxton. Buxton was the son of Sir Thomas Fowell Buxton and Lady Victoria Buxton, sister of the author. Charles Roden Buxton, 1875-1942, was a British philanthropist and radical Liberal (later Labour) Party politician. On the reverse of the frontispiece in the top corner is an ink stamp BEARDSLEY. .
