New York: Oakley & Mason. Near Fine. 1867. Cloth. An intriguing edition of this important work in Near Fine condition. Author Mitchel's name is misspelled on the title page as Mitchell, but is spelled correctly on the spine. Dark brown cloth with gilt lettering. One spot stains the first five leaves at left bottom corner and there is slight foxing throughout, but the page block is clean and tight overall. Personal inscription on front flyleaf ; A series of ten lectures given in 1848 by O. M. Mitchel who was Director of the Cincinnati Observatory and one of America's great 19th century astronomers. The book was published in an effort to help the general public become more familiar with the science of astronomy. The lectures cover the then-most recent appearance of Halley's Comet in 1835 and the discovery of the planet Neptune; 12mo .
