Very Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6� - 7�" tall. 1st Printing 3 Copyright date is 1822, First edition, first state with "their" at end of line 20 on p. 17 of second volume. Three volumes. Octavo (7.25 x 4.625 inches; 183 x 118 mm.). [2], vii, [1, blank], 322; [2], 332; [2], 346 pages. Contemporary half calf over marbled paper-covered boards, spine tooled in gilt with five raised bands and dark red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt; all text block edges trimmed and sprinkled red. Fairly mild wear at joints and spine ends, resulting in a bit of loss to surface of calf; boards lightly rubbed; minor edge wear; corners tapped. Small amount of faint foxing to endpapers; tiny, short worm track at lower corner of front free endpaper of first volume. Top edges of text blocks darkened, a couple of small spots of soiling; a few scattered instances of spot-staining and thumb soiling at margins; ribbon placeholders frayed. Very good.

First published in 2 volumes octavo in 1735, and again in 1744, this is the first edition in quarto, considerably improved and enlarged, pp. viii, plus unpaginated lexicon in double column; engraved frontispiece and 15 engraved plates; 20th-century quarter green morocco, the spine a bit discolored, else very good. With the bookplate of Wm. D. Tarrant, almost certainly the same Tarrant as the mayor of Wichita 1965-67, and the Gun Dog Editor for Field & Stream, and twice named Dog Writer of the Year by the Dog Writers Association of America. Terminology is alphabetically arranged throughout. Alston XVIII-4, 146 (erroneously identified as an octavo).
