1780 softcover pamphlet in very good condition. Paginates: (iii)-viii, [2], (9)-101, blank, lacking the half-title (if it ever existed). Second edition. Pencil notes of prior book seller on title page, no other markings, creases or interior problems. Bound in quality laid paper wraps. A very nice copy. The paper is wonderful example of the paper making trade in 1780's London. Content is scathing satire and complaints about, among other things, the loss of the colonies. A nice copy. More Notes: This is how most books came from the printer and it was up to the buyer to decide on further binding. This appears to have never been bound.

First edition, London, 1719. xviii, 196, [2]. Rebound (about 150 years ago) in red half leather with marbled boards and endpapers. Bookplate of Library of the Protestant Episcopal Church in the Diocese of Massachusetts. No other library indicia. Quality of the paper is just amazing - very supple, minimal foxing. 1886 hardcover by Fishkill Times, New York. Reprint of the 1828 first edition with an "Additional Appendix." I have compared this with the 1828 original and the text is the same while the plates are different. Condition is a mixed bag. At some point this volume was recased using original boards and it was expertly done. Boards show more than the usual stains. Interior is much better: has gift inscription dated 1929 and no other writing. Publisher was newspaper and the materials used are consistent with that. Paper is thin and now slightly brittle. Title page and table of contents both show small closed edge tears. Endpapers and plates are published on a delightful variety of colored papers: endpapers are salmon, plates are on yellow, pink and blue paper. Text is printed in columns like a newspaper article. First edition, hardcover, Syracuse, 1854. Green blindstamped cloth, gilt spine titles. Overall condition is Good: boards show moderate general wear, most at spine tips. Binding is sound. Spine is sun faded. Interior has ancient owner's name on front blank, a few stray pencil marks. Foxing is present is intermittent with most at front and back. Paginates: frontis, vi, 375 Field 324. This volume is his collection of stories from the native American peoples and early settlers of the Northeast. These reside at the intersection of history and myth. A talented writer and story teller. Recommended.

1847, first printing, 54 page pamphlet in fair to good condition. Wraps are nearly off, front is stained, title page heavily foxed with pencil notations of prior book seller. Interior is otherwise pretty good, minor to moderate foxing, no other writing or vandalism. Complete as issued. Scarce first printing of this satire on tobacco use. People have suggested for a long time that tobacco has ill effects on the health of users and those around them - here is a 19th century example of that opinion. Identification of the author is difficult - I have listed two common suggestions. I am pretty sure we can rule out Solomon Spittle. Item is rare: WordCat locates two copies of this printing (#237747794); none from this date are for sale. Please see scans of the item you will receive. Included in 'Medical' history as this pamphlet does more than hint at the health problems of tobacco users.

First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

1852 softcover pamphlet discussing the downside of tobacco. When I got this the cover was off. Volume has had some restoration: cover is backed with matching paper and is reattached. Paper and binding are fragile but overall readable with a gentle touch. Primary defect is the corner off the front page. Interior has foxing and stains but no vandalism. I think the author comes out of the same group that published Solomon Spittle (which I also have listed). 1852 is the first year this was published but this is titled "Fourth Thousand" so this is an early printing. Has 8 plates that are included in pagination. 179 pages, complete as issued. An uncommon item generally found in poor condition. This is decent not great (which sometimes is the best you can do). Topic is health problems of tobacco. Discusses addiction, acute toxicity, chronic health problems including heart and lung disease as well as problems of second hand smoke. Feel free to inquire. 1883 edition. Original full leather. Condition is Good: Front board professionally reattached, back board hinge reinforced. Spine leather shows loss and old repairs distant past. Text block is sound, boards stablized. Interior is very good: No interior writing, folds, smudges or other evidence of use. There is rare foxing. Rough on the outside excellent on the inside. Full leather binding is uncommon. Paginates: blank, frontis, title, (9)-548, blank. 16 color plates including the frontis. Complete as issued.
