San Francisco: The Book Club of California, designed by Jack Stauffacher of The Greenwood Press, 1991. Limited First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Sawkins, James Gay. One of 400 copies, oblong quarto, [126] pp., with prospectus. James Gay Sawkins (1806-1878) was a virtually unknown English artist who spent several years painting Hawaiian landscapes; this book publishes his work in a collected edition for the first time, revealing the genius of his work. Presented in the form of a pictorial album, depicting romantic glimpses of long since vanished landscapes and peoples of mid-nineteenth century Hawaii. With a scholarly foreword by Richard H. Dillon, and a little-known account of his life and travels by David W. Forbes, the whole being an important addition to the historical literature of the Hawaiian Islands.
