This is a special copy of "A Pictorial Biography of ANDREW JACKSON" by John Frost. 1860; Bill & Brother; Louisville, KY. The book features numerous engravings ("many of which are colored by hand by the best artists") as well as many in-text illustrations. This copy is from the personal library of VERPLANCK COLVIN (with his notes, bookplate, name stamp, and even some sketches) who was known as the "Great Surveyor of the Adirondacks," an advocate for the preservation of the six million acres that now make up the Adirondack Park. Colvin was a leading voice in the environmental preservation movement of the late 1800's into the early 1900's until his death in 1920.

From the Preface:
"In the present attempt, the writer has dwelt chiefly on that part of General Jackson's life respecting which there is no controversy, viz: his brilliant military career. In the narrative of his political life, little more has been attempted than a succinct statement of facts. The pictorial embellishments of the book are chiefly from the prolific pencil of Mr. Croome, whose merits are well known to the public. The author has found his esteem and reverence for the character of General Jackson to be constantly increasing, with the extent of the researches which this work has required him to make; and he believes, that popular as the subject of this memoir always has been, his favour with the American people is destined still to increase, so long as the Republic shall continue to exist."

Condition:
Soiling to the covers and spine; worn corners (the tips of boards are exposed). Tight binding with no cracks and no loose pages. With Verplanck Colvin's bookplate on the front pastedown, and his name stamped in ink once on the front pastedown and 4 times on the rear pastedown. The book is *HEAVILY* marked with underlines, notes and even some illustrations in colored pencil on nearly every page (Colvin has initialed some notes "V.C."); some of the black & white illustrations have been partially colored.
