Boards are covered in olive-green cloth with red and gilt lettering on front with black background illustrations of birds in bamboo; spine is black cloth which is overlaid with the original black leather with gilt lettering; edges of boards are beveled; all edges gilt; marbled endpapers; 80 numbered plates, 16 in color; 146 numbered illustrations with the text; all pages and illustrations present. Very good minus condition: leather on spine with some chips and wear; the spine has been blackened with leather dressing; light edge wear to boards; front board is clean and bright; back board is slightly scuffed and stained; hinges are strong; bookplate inside of Grace Nicholson; ffep has chips and has been taped in at hinge; first blank page creased; remaining pages and illustrations are in excellent condition. Illustrated throughout with numerous plates and vignettes demonstrating examples of the art. 39 of forty plates to volume III. Part IV has sixteen plates, of those listed to the 'List of Plates' to the contents, this work is lacking plates 19,38,39 and 40. To plate 35 of volume III the headpiece has been cut from the descriptive leaf. Further cuts to the leaf. Would appear the plate has also been removed and then loosely inserted is an image by Kikycgi Yosai of Yamato Takeru, the image intended to be this plate.
