About This Item

London: William Kimber, 1952. First edition in English of this mountaineering classic recounting the 1943 attempt of three escaped Italian prisoners of war to reach the summit of Mount Kenya. Octavo, original cloth, map endpapers. Very good in a very good dust jacket with some chipping to the crown and overall wear, tape repair to the verso. Rare in the original dust jacket. In No Picnic on Mount Kenya, Felice Benuzzi recounts one of the most bizarre and daring adventures of the twentieth century. In 1943, Benuzzi and two fellow Italian prisoners of war escaped from a British camp in equatorial East Africa with one goal to climb the seventeen-thousand-foot Mount Kenya, Africa's second tallest mountain. Filled with suspense and humor, it is an extraordinary story that has earned its place as a masterpiece. A film adaptation The Ascent was made in 1994. The screenplay was written by David Wiltse and the filming directed by Donald Shebib.
