This colorfully illustrated 1966 Regina Medal-winning childrens's book is about the adventures of Luigi, the organ grinder, and his pet monkey, Piccolo, as they explore the cable car system in Los Angeles in the 1960's. In addition to this being a very colorully illustrated edition, the author has hand painted a full page floral design above his signature on the frontice page. A REAL TREASURE! Pages are clean with light tanning in folds and page edges.

Born in Fresno, California, Leo Politi (1908-96) spent his developmental years studying art at the Institute of Monza in Milan, Italy. Returning to California in 1928, he settled near Olvera Street in Los Angeles and began writing and drawing in earnest, winning a Caldecott Award for his Song of the Swallows (1949). Inscribed and dated, with an original black ink drawing, by Politi on the front flyleaf. Quarto. Original blue cloth binding, with dark blue stamping. The dust jacket is price-clipped, with some general browning and wear along the extremities; otherwise very good.
