Compelling biography of Christian Barthelmess (1854-1906) who as a young man in 1876 emigrated from his native Bavaria, enlisted as an infantryman in the United States Army, and was promptly detailed to the Western territories where he dedicated himself to photographing Army, Indian, and pioneer life from Montana to New Mexico. An absorbing account, beautifully illustrated with over one hundred fascinating Barthelmess photos.
