Photo-Illustrated Travel Diary of a Trip "Out West", 1920-21

Condition: Near Fine/Near Fine

Various locations, 1920. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Small octavo journal with "Time Book Weely" on front board (approximately 4.5" x 7.5"). 85 handwritten pages illustrated with 40 gelatin silver photographs (approximately 2.5" x 3.5") that chronicle a middle-aged couple's six-month-long trip from Waukegan, Illinois through Colorado, Utah, and Mexico, with California as their ultimate destination, and which location accounts for the large majority of the journal. Disbound but boards are present. Easily readable, nice clear images, overall very good. The journal entries discuss: train travel on the Chicago-Northwestern Colorado Special, the Denver-Rio Grande Salt Lake City Route, the Pacific Electric, and the Southern Pacific; automobile travel from El Centro to San Diego; visits to Garcia, Tecate, Redondo, Tijuana, and Mexicali in Mexico including "booze, gambling, and all that goes with it"; Salt Lake City where they "took in the hive". However, the majoroty of the journal concerns itself with the couples activites in Califonia and include writings on Long Beach and Venice ("boy some place"); purchasing "brown goggles" (sun glasses) that didn't work from a "News Butcher" on the open car train to Colorado Springs. They mention an oil strike at Brawley, California, "some boom... formed a stock company... everybody nutty on oil"; a visit to the Busch Gardens in Pasadena, "I can't begin to explain how wonderful . . . this is"; Los Angeles and "the best movie shows in the world... Graumanns... with 60 piece orchestras and organs"; and more. The trip made such a positive impression on the couple, that in September, 1921, they moved to California and purchased a home in Eagle Rock.
