About This Item

[Central New Jersey], 1914. Unbound. Good. Photo album. Oblong octavo. Thick card leaves with inset grommets intended for string binding, now disbound. Contains 33 mounted gelatin silver images, mostly around 2.75" x 4.5" with several of the images either a little larger or smaller. Some of the margins of the thick card have chipped or broken away, the boards fair only, the images about very good with some uneven fading on some, and one chip in the corner of one image. The front board is hand-lettered "Triple Alliance", otherwise the album is mostly uncaptioned except for one image identified as "Centre town, New Jersey", but most with dates; all in either 1912, 1913 or 1914. An interesting album, apparently of a men's athletic club, most of the images depict younger men in athletic tank tops with the intertwined T & A logo of the Triple Alliance. The cheerful group are depicted playing baseball, brandishing tennis racquets, sailing, canoeing, swimming, on the beach or by a boathouse, and in a couple of images hugging girls. Provenance, as well as the one captioned photo, suggests that the album came from the Central New Jersey Shore area. The nearest match to Centre Town we could find in New Jersey was Centreton in Salem, N.J.
