About This Item

Winter Park, Florida and others, 1941. Hardcover. Near Fine. Oblong quarto measuring roughly 12 x 7." String-tied boards embossed in blind and title "Photographs" in gilt on the front board. Contains 119 gelatin silver photographs. Various sizes, probably the majority are 2" x 2.75" with the rest mostly larger. Corners of the boards a little rubbed else near fine, the images are near fine or better. Well-captioned, many of the subjects identified with first and last names and the locations where they were taken.

The photos, dated 1941 were compiled by one individual, likely a woman with all the photos captioned in the same hand, in some cases acknowledging if someone else took the photograph. Almost all of the images were taken at Rollins. Photographs depict students socializing and posing around campus. Of note are seven photographs depicting Dodo Bundy (i.e. Dorothy Cheney), a renowned American tennis player who was the first American to win the Australian Open in 1938. The only images not taken at Rollins are a couple in Miami, and a few that depict a road trip home from school northwards through Georgia and North Carolina, possibly to watch Bundy play: four of these depict her in action on the tennis court.

Rollins College in Winter Park (outside of Orlando) is the oldest post-secondary institution in Florida. A pleasing and geographically homogenous album with sharp and clear images.
