About This Item

New York, Maine, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire: 1DR, 1890. Hardcover. Very Good. Oblong folio measuring 16" x 11". String bound, black cloth covered boards with gilt decorations. Contains 384 sepia toned photographs measuring 4" x 3.5" with some captions. Tears on the spine panel with the pages detached, very good with near fine photographs with some fading.

A family photo album of a group traveling around the North East during the turn of the century, circa 1890. The family can be seen visiting various parks in New York, Maine, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire. Ponds, lakes, and wide open camping areas are the predominate setting of most of the photographs with the traveling party dressed in traditional camping and hiking gear of the time. Clearwater, Bingham, Temple Stream, and the Happy River Valley are just a few of the ponds and streams pictured in the album. The group can be seen pictured together for family photographs sometimes posed in the wilderness or photographed while riding in carriages and early automobiles to their next destination. A few photos show some of the family racing other horse carriages. The photographs show the family enjoying outdoor activities other than hiking such as tennis, hunting, and photography. One photograph shows a man setting up a different camera. A few structures are pictured, mostly churches and cities where parades are being held. There are also shots of the U.S. Destroyer Battleship with several other boats from different states in the New Jersey Harbor.

An extensive family travel album to various lakes and rivers in the North East, circa 1890.
