Philadelphia: J.B. Lippincott & Co, 1864. Hardcover. G, spine needs some repair, foxing, light stain at bottom corner of several pages, still readable and plates are clean. Brown cloth binding with blind debossed borders as well as gilt lettering and decoration on front board and blind debossed lettering and decoration on back boards. 47 pp. plus 5 pages of plates in B&W. Inscription to previous owner on flyleaf. A guide to the collecting, drying, and skeletonization of leaves. An extension of an essay originally to be published in the Atlantic Monthly in 1861 but which was delayed in its publication due to its being, according to the preface: "an article which is so little in accordance with the tone of the current American literature during the past eventful year" (the first year of the American Civil War).

Early book label of Lutheran Board Publication Philadelphia. 5 plates. Contemporary two page manuscript on skeletonizing leaves laid in. Later stamp of Dover Archives. A surprisingly scarce little book, perhaps because of a delayed publication issue. According to the preface: "an article which is so little in accordance with the tone of the current American literature during the past eventful year" (the first year of the American Civil War).
