Milwaukee, WI: American Publishing Company, 1890. Bird's-eye view. Lithograph [70 cm x 101 cm] mounted on board. Image is sharp and in nice overall condition. Uncommon bird's-eye view of Helena, that is usually printed with a Kessler's Brewery Advertisement beneath the title. Sixteen inset illustrations along the foot as a border, of prominent buildings and views. Some of the buildings are numbered/lettered, legend lists: Public buildings, Hotels, Railroads, Street Railways, Schools, Newspapers and Churches (52 in all).

"A Brewery in Helena appears as the sponsor of the large view of that city in 1890. Perhaps some copies of these views were published and sold in the normal way through subscriptions and sales in local shops, while other copies were overprinted with such advertising copy and made available to the sponsor at a previously agreed upon price." - p.29, 'Cities on Stone' (John W. Reps).

Description:
First House edition of this famous report. 1845. Complete in original binding except for the gigantic map which is available in full size color thick glossy paper professional reproduction ($25 extra if desired). Pagination: 583 pages, 22 plates, 4 maps, all blanks present. Includes fascinating pencil diagram of oil rig on back of map. Oil rig drawing titled "Sheffield Oil Company. Warren(?), Co., Pa." That pencil drawing is the only interior writing or ownership marking anywhere in the book. Condition is a mixed bag. Original half leather marbled boards show heavy wear and looks like they were professionally rehinged in the distant past. Binding is sound. Pages show moderate to heavy toning and foxing. Some plates have weird 'dot' foxing I have never seen elsewhere (see scan). Marbled endpapers. A nice well maintained copy suitable for reading and research with a cool drawing. Howes F372; Wagner-Camp 115:2; Graff 1436. House Doc. No. 166. Feel free to inquire. Please see scans of the book you will… Read More

[Missouri][Politics] Autograph Letter Signed. St Louis, Easter Sunday, April 7, 1844. From R. C. Cabeen to his Cousin Mr. J. W. Cabeen in Bluff Post office, Merced County, Illinois. One sheet folded into four leaves. Self-folded to stamp-less envelope. Very good. Legible writing.
Mentions the children have had the measles, and the Spring business season has not yet occurred. At the end a short discussion of wheat prices and crops. Most of the letter is a long discussion of Missouri politics, the election and Henry Clay, etc. In the 1844 election Henry Clay was the Whig candidate and James Polk was the Democratic candidate. A faction of the Democratic Party were known as the Loco Focos and the Whigs charged that Van Buren was a Loco Foco radical. Clay was referred to as "Ol Coon Clay," so that "coon" was a reference to Whigs. These terms are used in the letter:
"It is with joy that I tell you of the devilish licking the locos got here last Monday. The poor devils I pitied them. The City has been under… Read More

Milwaukee: American Publishing Co., [1890-1892].. Lithograph, 24 x 36¼ inches. Expertly backed and conserved, repairing a few small tears and paper separations. Very clean. Near fine. A stunning bird's-eye view of the Texas border town of Laredo, produced in the early 1890s as a promotional piece by the Laredo Real Estate & Abstract Company. This energetic cityscape is the earliest bird's- eye view of the city, and shows a bustling and thriving community, with a dense grid of houses and businesses, a railroad line to the west of the town, and several coal refineries billowing black smoke from high stacks. To the south of Laredo is a portion of the northern Mexico city of Nuevo Laredo, located in the Mexican state of Tamaulipas. The two cities are prominently split in the lower third of the view by the spectacular Rio Grande River, with a railroad bridge and "electric motor" street bridge connecting the two cities. Vignettes along the lower portion of the sheet show prominent Laredo buildings,… Read More
