London: Bradbury & Evans, 1850. First Edition, First Printing. First Printing, bound from the original serialized parts, with all required First Issue points, including on Page 132, line 20, which reads screamed, later corrected to 'screwed'. This printing error is only present in the First Issue. The vignette title page has Bradbury & Evans and the date 1850 present at the bottom of the page. All other typographical errors present and described at the bottom of this listing. Bound in a period leather binding, with pebble grained black cloth. Five raised bands on the spine. Spine label stating David Copperfield' in gilded text is bright and legible. Complete, and with 39 plates, plus the vignette title page. In about Very Good condition overall. The leather is very supple, and hinges are sound. Front cover fore edge corners bumped, base of spine bumped. Leather hinges are very well preserved, showing little wear. Text is generally clean and un-foxed, really quite fresh, but for some spotting in several places, especially adjacent to the plates. The plates mostly very clean, the plate facing page 149 has a large marginal loss extending to the slight edge of the engraving, restorable by an expert conservator, shown in the pictures. Tiny Glasgow Booksellers stamp at the base of the front pastedown. The internal hinge endpapers show some separation, but the sewing and the cords are very secure, and the text block is quite sturdy and tight. A little loose from usage. and some generalized wear, including an occasional crease, and an over extended page. An early owner's name, and some old ink offsetting on the rear blank end paper from a letter that must have been tipped in many years ago. This book is complete, and is an excellent copy of this highly desirable First Printing of arguably Dickens' most famous work. With the rare First Issue 'screamed' point, and bound in a leather binding from that period. All typographical errors are present, as follows: Page 132, line 20, which reads screamed, later corrected to 'screwed'. This printing error is only present in the First Issue. The vignette title page has Bradbury & Evans and the date 1850 present at the bottom of the page. Chapter XXVII page 283; Pages 16 & 225 with recal; Page 19 with cha pter; Page 387 with coroboration; Page 472 lacking end quote. (Smith.) (Gimbel.) Pagination: Front EP; Blank [i-ii]; Illustrated Frontispiece facing Vignette Half Title; [iii-xiv]; Errata Leaf [six lines]; Text Page[1]-624; Rear Endpaper. Complete. David Copperfield ranks as the finest of his writings. 'Of all my books,' Dickens wrote, 'I like this the best; like many fond parents I have my favourite child, and his name is David Copperfield.' It is certainly Dickens' most personal and autobiographical work, especially in the remarkable early chapters describing David's provincial upbringing and his experiences in the bleak warehouses of London. Abounding in vivid characters such as Uriah Heep, Betsy Trotwood, Mr. Micawber, the Pegottys and Mr. Dick, it continues to rank among Dickens' most popular and critically acclaimed works.
