New York: New Republic, 1935. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good copy, with minor edgewear, mainly to extremities. Lacking the dust-jacket.. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed "to Alice [Decker Ferguson] who got bopped, from Kenneth [Burke], who makes a business of getting bopped./ Februaury 1936". First edition, first printing, with no mention of a later printing on copyright page. Decker (1901-1979) was a sculptress born in Missouri, and evidently a good friend of Burke's. Unique presentation of a scarce book, inscribed to an artist. Burke (1897-1993) was a very influential poet, literary theorist, essayist and novelist, who had a powerful impact on 20th-century philosophy, aesthetics, criticism, and rhetorical theory - in particular as to the treatment of language as symbolic action. Among those he influenced were Harold Bloom, Stanley Cavell, Susan Sontag (who was his student at the University of Chicago), Erving Goffman, Edward Said, and many others. Small 8vo flexible cloth. PLEASE NOTE that all our First Editions are also First Printings, unless we specifically note otherwise. All our dust jackets are protected in clear mylar covers.

Description:
Paperback / softback. New. Treats human communication in terms of ideal cooperation. In this book, the author establishes that form permeates society just as it does poetry and the arts. It states that forms of art are not exclusively aesthetic: the cycles of a storm, the gradations of a sunrise, the undoing of Prince Hamlet are all instances of progressive form.
