About This Item

Washington DC: L.I.P. & B.A., 1912. First Edition. Fine. Display type surrounds a cartoon (7.25" x 12.25") that shows farm families in financial straits. A farmer is saying to his wife, "The factories closed, everybody is idle and penniliess! Soon there'll be no home market for our crops." Other areas of the cartoon show idle factories, empty boxcars, a mobbed crowd at the employment agency, a closed mine, long lines at the soup house, rundown cottages, sullen family members, etc. Overall size is 14" x 14", minor spot on date. Shrink-wrapped on slightly larger foam core. Chandlee was a Washington newspaperman, illustrator, and political pundit. Here, he defends the policies of Senator Boies Penrose (1860-1921), chairman of the Pennsylvania Republican Party, a partner in the Utah Copper Company, supporter of Taft over Theodore Roosevelt as the Republican nominee in the 1912 presidential campaign, etc.
