Story of an illiterate shepherd and street musician who has a vision of the Virgin Mary one night in 1476 in the small southern German town of Niklashausen. He burns his drum and goes on to preach mightily to the peasants who come in great numbers to hear his message that all property should be held in common and that priests should be murdered. He is eventually burned at the stake by the authorities who fear his radical message .
