Translated from the Italian by M. Prichard-Agnetti. This book is the first of a trilogy of Rome. It pictures the "little ancient world" of Vasolda in 1848-1849. Set in Valsolda on Lake Lugano in Italy. Fogazarro tried to incorporate Darwinism with Roman Catholicism, as a result of which the third book of the trilogy, Il Santo (The Saint), was barred by the church. 516 pp..
