About This Item
Simon and Schuster, 1940. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. The first edition, in the original box. This is the second state of the first edition, with the button box instead of the ball. 12mo, (4 1/8" wide x 5 3/8), pictorial boards, Near fine in very good publisher's box (worn) and fine custom-made collector's slipcase. A now classic book, illustrated in color. Every other page offers a different activity for the youngest child to enjoy and TOUCH (7 in all). It was partly an experiment in using interactive elements in a book, which was unusual at the time. This is the very rare second issue of this iconic title, with a box of buttons replacing a ball that was designed to squeak when the child pressed it. Because it malfunctioned most of the time, the ball was replaced with a box of real buttons. This copy has the box of buttons. The mirror in the first issue was also later replaced with scented flowers. This copy has the flowers. This is one of the rarest of all modern picture books, especially in the original box. See Bader p.238- 9. Housed in a custom-made slipcase.
Synopsis
Pat the Bunny (official styled as pat the bunny) is a "touch and feel" book for small children and babies that has been a perennial best-seller in the U.S. since publication in 1940. It is not a book in the traditional sense, but more a collection of things to do, such as pat the fake fur of a rabbit on one page, feel a bit of sandpaper that stands for "daddy's scratchy face" on another, and look in a mirror on yet another.
