Walter Brooks was born into slavery in 1851 and went on to serve as pastor of the Nineteenth Street Baptist Church in D.C. for over sixty years. Illustrated with photographs of Brooks beginning at age 15 in 1866, just one year out of slavery. Publisher and the author of the 22-page preface Carter G. Woodson founded The Associated Publishers in 1920--it is the oldest African-American publishing company in the United States. Dust jacket illustrated by James Porter, a pioneer in the field of African-American art history. Small dent and faint red mark on spine, light stain to front cover otherwise bright, crisp and near fine in bright, very good or better slightly rumpled dust jacket with matching red mark on spine, light internal damp staining, few small chips and closed tears. Scarce to rare.
