Passposts, Documents And Photographs Documenting The Post WWII Emigration Of A Yugoslav Refugee Family To Enumclaw, WA, In 1947 -

1947. A small archive from the Schiltz (Silc) family: 6 passports, 9 documents (several with photographs) and one loose photograph. Alois Schiltz (b. 11/18/1914 in Kocevje, Sodrazica, Yugoslavia - now southern Slovenia, d. 4/14/2000) and his wife Josephina Peppa Schiltz (b. 3/11/1923, d. 5/17/2006) emigrated to the United States in 1947. Sometime after WWII Alois and Josephina were in a refugee camp in Munich for displaced persons, called SS Kaserne Freimann, so they may have been survivors of a concentration camp or were otherwise displaced. Alois' brother John Schiltz (b 2/8/1910, d. 7/1983) was living in Enumclaw, Washington. The brothers' parents were John (Yanes) Schiltz and Helena Gorjup, both born in Austria. With the help of the Catholic Committee for Refugees (and probably John), Alois and Josephina emigrated to the U.S. under the auspices of the Catholic Committee for Refugees, arriving March 19, 1947 in Washington state, and for a time staying with John, at Rt 1, Box 740, Enumclaw, WA. Alois was a blacksmith helper; he and his wife became naturalized citizens in 1952 and had a son and a daughter. The archive Includes: • Official baptismal certificate dated 1910 for John, and later certified by Rev. J. G.Stafford, pastor, St. James Cathedral and Our Lady of Good Hope Church, June 14, 1927 to be used in conjunction with a passport application and noting that a passport was issued June 29, 1927, US Dept. of State. • Certified copy of birth certificate (in duplicate) for John Schiltz (b. 1910), dated 1927. • Six passports, including 1927 and 1965 passport for John Schiltz; 1965 and 1970 passports for Josephina, 1965 passport for Alois, and 1965 passport for Evan Daniel. The family apparently all made a trip back to Yugoslavia in 1965. • Card for the Ille-de-France out of Le Havre indicating one of the Schiltz family (possibly John as it was in his passport) in Room 13. • "Right of legitimacy" card for Alois, dated 1940, in Russian, with his photograph. • Identity card for Alois (then Silc) issued by Regno D'Italia Kraljevina Itallia Provincia di Lubiana Liubljanska Pokrajina, with his photograph and dated 2/17/1942. • Voluntary workers certificate for Alois, for the UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration) Team 107, stating that he was voluntary worker at SS Kaserne Freimann D. P. Center and should be issued one package of cigarettes daily. This was a refugee center for displaced persons, located in Munich, Germany after WWII. • Card with the address information for the Catholic Committee Shelter 429 West 49th St., New York, probably given to the couple on their arrival in the US. • Western union telegram dated March 15, 1947 sent by the Catholic Committee for Refugees to John advising arrival of the couple to Cedar Falls, WA on March 19 and requesting they be met. • Letter from the Catholic Committee for Refugees to Alois envelope dated 1948 thanking him for the repayment of funds issued on his family's behalf related to their resettlement and returning his promissory note. • Photograph (2 ¼ x 3 ½ inches) of Alois in a uniform. • Document for Ivan Silc for 1925/1926 issued in Ljubljana having to do with school records. • Short obituary clipping for John, indicating he worked as a green chain worker for Weyerhaeuser for 46 years. • A small religious book, Ljubljana, 1925, in Slovenian. • A book entitled Nova Stifta, dated 1941, in Slovenian. • An old ABC book, dated 1906, Ljubljana, in Slovenian. • Statement of benefits and deductions (Form-1797) for John Schiltz, 1983. • Copy of the Notice of change of address for John Schiltz. • Hand drawn floor plan. • International Driving Permit for Alois Schiltz, 1980.
