This crooner, saxophonist and bandleader was one of the first teen idols in the late 1920s, a radio, concert and recording sensation who was mobbed by flappers at every turn; in later years he appeared in films and on stage. Partly-printed ADS, 1p, 8¼" X 3", New York, NY, 1935 April 4. Near fine. Pale orange check drawn on the Manufacturers Trust Company, filled out in a secretarial hand in a purplish ink to Bushel & Gottlieb in the amount of $833.33 and boldly signed by him. Interestingly, this check appears to be payment to the attorneys representing him in his highly-publicized divorce from his second wife, starlet Fay Webb. They married in 1931, separated in 1933 and, amidst charges of violence and adultery on his part, were granted a divorce in 1936. Bushel & Gottlieb represented Vallee and managed to get these charges dismissed and Webb's large monthly maintenance expenses reduced to a flat $100 per month. In 1936, she died suddenly at age 27. Not your run-of-the-mill Vallee check!
