About This Item

This book is in very good condition. There is little wear on the front, back, spine, and edges of the cover boards. There is no bumping and minimal fraying on the cover boards. The previous owner has put her signed bookplate on the first blank page across from the inside cover board. The pages are white and crisp except for the edges that are beginning to yellow or tan. The pages are clear of any markings. There are some tears at the top of the dust jacket.

"The children of William Wilberforce never knew their father as a young man. He was, after all, in his thirty-eighth year when in 1797 he married Barbara Ann Spooner, the eldest daughter of Isaac Spooner of Elm-den Hall, near Coventry, and had already become a national figure. He had been Member for Yorkshire for thirteen years. His youthful intimacy with William Pitt - when they had played faro into the night at Brooks's and Goosetree's and paid court to Mrs. Crewe and Mrs. Siddons - had years ago passed into a more sober, if no less affectionate, friendship; ever since, in fact, William had first felt the call of 'true' religion in the winter of 1784. He was already the acknowledged champion of the reformation of public manners and the abolition of the slave trade...." - Chapter One from The Parting Of Friends: The Wilberforces and Henry Manning
