About This Item

New York: The MacMillan Company, 1966. Hardcover. Very Good/Good Plus to Very Good. A biography of legendary Irish Nationalist Charles Parnell, leader of the Home Rule movement of the late 19th century, viewed as a hero with a single flaw in the manner of Greek Tragedy. Parnell, a Protestant politician who allied himself with the Irish Catholic public over the home rule and British landlords issues, was able to unite Ireland for a few, short, tumultous years until his adulterous affair with the wife of another leader, William O'Shea, resulted in divorce. First edition, first printing (as stated). About 6 x 8 1/2 inches, 408 pages including bibliography and index, bound in blue cloth-covered boards with silver lettering on spine. Pictorial dustjacket shows Victorian era city-scape in white, grey and black with white lettering at top of panel. Back panel shows b & w full panel photo of Parnell. Boards show minor soiling and a touch of fading to title on spine, o/w no tearing, chipping, creasing, scratching. Text shows no tears, creases or marking. Not ex-library, not remaindered. Dust jacket shows edge wear, including minor chipping at upper spine end and some soiling on obverse. Not price-clipped. A quite decent copy of this book treating Parnell as a great patriot but fallible human being. Abels, at one time an economist in the U.S. Small Business Administration, also wrote the bestselling, "The Rockefeller Billions.
