Adelaide: Government Printer, 1858. Foolscap folio, single sheet, related pencilled note to lower blank portion of the sheet. Babbage complains of his treatment and dismissal following unsuccessful infland survey work in South Australia.'In 1858 the surveyor Benjamin Herschel Babbage had been sent by the government with instructions to explore to the west of Lake Torrens, then to return to Port Augusta and search for grazing land in the far north of the colony. Babbage, however, took such an inordinately long time over the first phase of his survey that frustrated pastoralists lobbied the government to have him replaced by somebody who would see the task through with greater urgency' (Howgego W7,B).

Description:
Sydney: Government printer, 23 November, 1887. Single foolscap sheet, slightly foxed. This notice prints a dispatch from detective Jules P. Rochaix to the Sydney Inspector General of Police, reporting the imminent retrenchment of 200 Chinese miners from the Nickel Company of New Caledonia, and fears that they will come to New South Wales. This appears to be quarantine issue rather than a criminal one, in that 'It is these Chinese that the introduction of the fever 'dengue' in New Caledonia is attributed.' .
